Painting Fabric (Velvet) With Annie Sloan Chalk Paint

Chair Before
It’s hard to believe this is the same chair.
I love velvet but the green wasn’t working for me so I decided to paint the entire chair including the velvet in Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.
I have painted over leather, vinyl and cotton before with Chalk Paint but this was my first time painting velvet.
To start with I gave the chair a water down with a squirt sprayer. The chair needs to be quite wet to start with.
Then I painted on one generous coat of Louis Blue Chalk Paint. I had a bowl of water beside me at all times and dipped my brush from the paint into the water each time as this way the paint gets into the velvet a lot easier and covers well. I then let the piece dry over night before doing the second coat. It was overcast and rainy the day I did this but yesterday when the sun was shining I did my second coat then put the chair outside to dry in the sun. Overall I did about three coats to the velvet watering down each coat as I went.
I used almost one tin of paint for this project. So painting over velvet you will use a fair bit of paint as apposed to painting over vinyl or leather where you will hardly use any paint at all.
The plusher the pile the more paint you will use.
Thankfully it was just the one chair as I don’t think I would be keen to paint a whole velvet lounge.
Chair After

Once you have the coverage you need and the velvet was dry I sanded the chair all over with a fine grade sandpaper (220 grit) and clear waxed the entire piece.
The timber frame I painted in pure white.
Amazing ha?
Now this chair is quite stunning and will make a nice display piece in the shop.
